EIF Invests €30 Million in Quantonation II to Boost Quantum Technology and Deep Physics in Europe

HighlightsNews24 June 2025

Paris, June 24, 2025 – The European Investment Fund (EIF) has announced a €30 million investment into Quantonation II, a pioneering early-stage venture capital fund dedicated to quantum technologies and deep physics. This strategic move, made under the InvestEU program, reflects the EIF’s ambition to strengthen Europe’s technological leadership and support sectors critical to future competitiveness.

Quantonation II, managed by Quantonation Ventures, the leading VC fund focused on quantum tech and deep physics, will deploy capital in early-stage rounds (from pre-seed to Series B), with a target fund size of €200 million. The fund aims to build a diversified portfolio of around 25 high-potential companies and 5 ventures studios worldwide. The fund is operating out of Paris and the US and is managed by Christophe Jurczak and Will Zeng, both of whom hold PhDs in quantum physics and Olivier Tonneau with a strong investment background and supported by Nobel Laureate Alain Aspect as an advisor.

Deep physics and quantum physics refer to advanced scientific research into the fundamental properties of matter and energy, including fields like quantum mechanics and particle physics. Building on these foundations, quantum technologies apply these principles to real-world use cases such as quantum computing and quantum sensing. Quantum computers can solve highly complex problems beyond the reach of classical machines, while quantum sensors enable extremely precise measurements in areas like navigation, healthcare, and materials science.

Despite remarkable advances in quantum research, the deep-tech sector faces a notable equity gap at early stages. Quantonation II addresses this funding bottleneck by investing in companies at the intersection of quantum science and practical application, covering areas like quantum computing, sensing, communications, as well as enabling technologies such as advanced photonics.

Marjut Falkstedt, Chief Executive of EIF, stated:
“Investing in Quantonation II allows us to support European companies at the forefront of quantum technology. By backing this fund, we are reinforcing our commitment to strengthening Europe’s technological sovereignty and nurturing high-potential sectors that require specialized expertise.”

Olivier Tonneau, Partner at Quantonation, added:
“We are proud to partner with the EIF in this new chapter for quantum innovation in Europe. Their €30 million investment into Quantonation II is a strong signal of trust and support for our mission to turn European scientific excellence into globally leading companies.”

To date, Quantonation II has already completed 9 investments, actively supporting some of the most promising startups in quantum and deep physics. The fund also provides follow-on investments as companies scale through successive rounds.

Quantonation’s previous successes include startups like:

  • Pasqal, Quandela and Quobly – quantum processors
  • Welinq and QphoX – quantum memories and quantum interconnects
  • Multiverse Computing and Kipu Quantum – Quantum and quantum inspired software
  • QBlox – Control electronics / enabling technologies

This EIF-backed initiative is expected to accelerate Europe’s progress toward becoming a global hub for quantum excellence, aligning investment with strategic science policy and technological leadership.
